Newcastle progressed into the fourth round of the FA Cup with a reasonably straightforward win over fourth-tier Bromley, but had to come from behind to do so.
This was yet another Newcastle game with an early goal, this time Bromley's Congreve outmuscling the returning Lewis Miley far too easily before beating Dubravka (still here!) with a long range shot into the corner that the keeper could possibly have done better with.
Eight minutes later, Miley more than made amends, absolutely thundering a shot into the top corner from well outside the box when given a hint of space.
From there on in the result never particularly felt in doubt, though it was still level at half time despite Newcastle dominating.
Two big guns were introduced at half time, Bruno replacing Joelinton in a pre-planned change, Gordon coming on for the hamstrung Barnes, who had failed to impress.
And within a few minutes, Gordon had converted a penalty won by Matt Targett, himself making his first start since last year's Old Trafford League Cup demolition job.
Targett did perfectly well against the lower league opposition and it'll have done him good to get some minutes in his legs.
Less impressive were Sean Longstaff (an off day, or affected by speculation that he may be sacrificed at the PSR altar?) and Miggy Almiron, whose time at Gallowgate must surely now be up regardless of the fee we can get.
And to cap off the afternoon, on the hour mark Will Osula finally broke his Toon duck with a blistering left footed strike across the keeper, following some slightly unconvincing stepovers after cutting in from the right.
Man of the match was Lewis Miley, dominating the midfield in addition to his goal.
All in all it's tempting to file this under "a very nice day for all concerned", Andy Woodman taking his players for a meal on the Bigg Market the night before the game perhaps suggesting that they were just happy to be here.
Their 3,000 fans got a goal to celebrate, we got minutes into some rusty legs, rest into some tired legs, Miley got a proper run out and looked great, Osula got off the mark, and we got a "could have been worse" draw away to Birmingham in the next round.
The domestic treble is still on!.
