Newcastle got back to winning ways on Saturday after a timely visit to basement side Southampton.

However, they had to come from a goal down following lax defending leading to Bednarek heading home in the 10th minute.

Newcastle got back into it midway through the first half though, Isak being felled in the box and getting up to slide the penalty home.

And four minutes later it was advantage Newcastle, Isak collecting the most beautiful, perfectly weighted through ball from Jacob Murphy, taking it in his stride with his left foot and sweeping it home with his right.

What a goal.

It wasn't entirely comfortable from there, is-he-isn't-he number one Martin Dubravka making a remarkable save from an overhead kick moments before the killer third goal - and what a goal it was.

Tonali headed the ball forward to Isak and set off flying up the pitch like an Olympic sprinter.

Isak nonchalantly chested the ball down to Gordon, who, not do be outdone in the nonchalance stakes, caressed the ball into the space between the Southampton centre backs into which Tonali was now steaming and he confidently placed the ball into the corner.

There was still almost time for a nervy ending when some pure brainfartery from Schar let Southampton in to score, but once it was chalked off for offside the jeopardy went out of the match.

So not the sternest test, but an away win is an away win and to achieve it without really having to go up the gears is a bonus ahead of some massive games.
